What does EIFS stand for?

Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) is a type of exterior wall cladding that has a plaster-like exterior skin and rigid insulation boards on the outside of the wall sheathing. EIFS was created in West Germany in the 1960s and was first brought to the United States by Dryvit in 1969. Expanded polystyrene (bead board) was used in the Dryvit system, which was then adhered to the sheathing and covered with a lamina made of a modified cement base coat, woven glass fiber reinforcement, and a colorful, textured finish.

Fundamentals

All EIFS are proprietary systems, and the system components should not be altered beyond the limits specified in the manufacturer’s literature. The wall designer is responsible for designing the interface with other components of the wall system. Details should make the final construction’s design evident. The sequence in which the wall assembly is to be built is addressed in the specifics if necessary. Terminations, apertures, joints, objects mounted onto the surface, and specific surface treatments are examples of EIFS construction circumstances that should be described if they exist on the building.

How does EIFS system work?

A form of cladding system called an Outside Insulation Finishing System (EIFS), often referred to as External Wall Insulation Systems (EWI) or External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS), offers exterior walls with a waterproofed finished surface that is also insulated.

How is EIFS applied?

EIFS is often fastened to the outside face of exterior walls with cementitious or acrylic-based glue or mechanical fasteners. EIFS is often attached to gypsum board, cement board, or concrete substrates using adhesives.
